The depth rod acts as a drag anchor at the rear of the machine, creating resistance to hold the rotating tines at a consistent digging depth rather than allowing the rotavator to pull forward across the surface. A bent or missing depth rod makes the machine difficult to steer and results in uneven tilling. When fitting, slide the steel rod through the rear mounting bracket and secure it at your desired tilling depth using the retaining pin.
